Menstrual Cramps
Men are spared the troublesome menstrual cramps, also known as dysmenorrhea. Menstrual cramps are characterized by a dull or throbbing pain localized in the lower abdominal area. It could happen before or during menstruation, and the pain frequency and intensity varies from one woman to another. There are two types of dysmenorrhea: primary and secondary. Primary dysmenorrhea does not include any physical abnormality and just results in muscle cramping. With secondary dysmenorrhea, an underlying condition, such as fibroids or endometriosis, appears with the pain.

Menstrual Cramps
During menstruation, the uterus contracts to help expel the endometrial lining, which is responsible for the menstrual bleeding. Many experts believe that the prostaglandin (hormone-like substance responsible for pain and inflammation) levels are increased and triggers these painful muscular contractions.
Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often prescribed for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. Herbal remedies can also ease the muscle cramps. Treatment for secondary dysmenorrhea should focus on the underlying disorder, and it is best to seek a doctor’s advice for this.
