Hepatitis

Hepatitis, also known as inflammation of the liver, is caused by various factors. Several viruses have been known culprits to this disease. There are three important types of hepatitis: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Hepatitis A is the least serious type. The symptoms include loss of weight, nausea, and mild fevers. The urine is noticeably dark in color, and in some cases, jaundice (yellowing of skin) is seen. On examination, the liver may be found enlarged and tender. Usually the cause of hepatitis A is the ingestion of contaminated water or food, and this infection is usually spread through poor sanitation.

Hepatitis B is a more serious disease. It can lead to chronic hepatitis, also known as liver cirrhosis. This form of hepatitis progresses rapidly and has a sudden onset. Spread of this infection is through blood or serum transmissions or through the use of contaminated needles and syringes. Eventually, the patient dies especially when left untreated.

Hepatitis C is emerging as one of the major causes of chronic liver disease. Just like hepatitis B, spread of infection is through blood transmissions, use of infected needles and syringes with the addition of unprotected sex with a known infected person.

Treatment depends on the type of hepatitis. But for the early stages of the disease, herbal remedies can prevent further progression of liver cirrhosis. The following herbs may aid in the improvement of symptoms and, perhaps, the cure of hepatitis.

Herb Description, Treatment & Procedures
Ampalaya

(Momordica charantia) Ampalaya, or bitter melon in English, has been proven to be an effective herbal medicine especially in the Philippines. It is also a good source of vitamins A, B, C, iron, folic acid, phosphorus and calcium. It is a known antioxidant, antibacterial and antipyretic for the treatment of most common illnesses. For liver diseases, juice the ampalaya leaves and drink a spoonful every day.
Virgin Coconut Oil
(Cocos nucifera) Virgin coconut oil (VCO) is similar to regular coconut oil since it is rich in lauric acid, an essential fatty acid that is believed to fight viral, bacterial and parasitic pathogens. But VCO is unlike regular coconut oil because of its processing difference. VCO reportedly does not raise bad cholesterol levels, unlike regular coconut oil. Thus, VCO brings more medicinal benefits for the cure of many common illnesses. The benefits include boosting the body’s immune system, regulating blood sugar, lowering viral load of AIDS patients, helping hepatitis C and herpes patients, maintaining healthy thyroid functions, maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and, lastly, healing and nourishing the skin, hair and scalp. For the treatment of liver diseases like hepatitis, drink VCO in its pure form to maintain normal functioning of this vital organ.
Higus manok
(Eclipta alba) This medicinal weed is known to cure hepatitis, asthma and bronchitis, among other illnesses. It is a ubiquitous plant in the Philippines, and often it is used for tattooing and hair dyeing. For the treatment of hepatitis, the leaves and tops are brewed in decoction.
