Arthritis

A joint is the area where two bone ends meet. Arthritis is medically translated as inflammation of the joints. However, the term still applies to pain in the joints regardless of inflammation being present or not. Nowadays, arthritis comes in different forms, and the affected joints of each type of arthritis depend on the causative factor. Heredity plays an important factor in the diagnosis of this medical condition. Still, there are other physical factors that contribute in its cause.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis

There are two commonly diagnosed arthritides: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the wear and tear of the articular cartilages, which line at the bone ends, of weight-bearing joints like the knees and spine. This is a chronic condition that progresses to disabling joint pains unless treatment or surgery is applied. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most disabling of all the arthritides. It not only affects the weight-bearing joints but also the joints of the hands and the major organs of the body. This is a systemic progressive disease diagnosed by a positive rheumatoid factor in the blood. In the late stages of rheumatoid arthritis, joint deformities, contractures and rheumatic nodules are observable.

There is no cure for arthritis unless there is joint replacement surgery done. Treatment focuses on the relief of pain, decrease in swelling and the prevention of further articular damage and deformities. Anti-inflammatories and analgesics are usually prescribed. Herbal remedies also play a role in the rehabilitation of arthritic patients. They are natural and more cost-effective than the synthetic variants.
